After 15 years in the works, a new recreation and wellness centre is coming to Trent Hills.
From a National Hockey League-sized rink to a therapy pool, the construction of the new Campbellford Recreation and Wellness Centre is expected to begin as soon as this fall.
David Piccini, Northumberland-Peterborough South MPP, joined by Trent Hills Mayor Bob Crate, announced during a recent virtual press conference funding for two infrastructure projects in the Municipality of Trent Hills.
The first project through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program: Community, Culture and Recreation Stream, is the construction of the new multi-purpose recreation facility.
The second project through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program: Green Stream, is the replacement of a standpipe along with 875 metres of watermain to connect the new standpipe to the distribution system and improve the water supply.
“The announcement of these projects is a real highlight for my role as mayor,” Crate said.
“The Campbellford Recreation and Wellness Centre is the culmination of years of work and planning to bring this new asset to our community. The improvements to the Hastings drinking water system with the replacement of the standpipe is critical to ensure the continued safe supply of water and fire protection for our residents. Both projects are vitally important to our municipality.”
Partnering with YMCA Northumberland, the Campbellford Recreation and Wellness Centre will be located just off Highway 30 in the Campbellford Business Park. The facility will be about 66,000 square feet and will also include a lane pool, a fitness room and a multi-purpose room.
The federal government is investing $4,134,669 towards this project, with the province providing more than $3,445,800. The Municipality of Trent Hills is contributing more than $8,589,500.
The government of Canada is also investing $1,043,700 towards the replacements of the Hastings Treated Water Standpipe and the Ontario government is providing more than $869,600. The Municipality of Trent Hills is contributing more than $695,800 to the project.
“Investments in both recreational and watermain infrastructure are essential in ensuring the well-being and safety of communities,” Piccini said.
“Today’s investments for the Campbellford Recreation and Wellness Centre and the Hastings standpipe project means better fire protection and a reliable water supply for residents, and a new multi-purpose, modern space through which they can access community and recreational activities.
“It’s going to be a state-of-the-art, inclusive and welcoming facility,” Piccini noted.
